Strum Your Way to Better Health

As health conscious women we tend to put a lot of focus on the things we can see versus those we can’t. If we notice a blemish it is only natural to treat it with facial cream. We even do preventative things like use a vitamin E moisturizer to help fight off wrinkles. But what do we do when we feel depression pangs or a sting of low self esteem? Playing the guitar is a great way to stimulate the mind, express your creativity, and fight off depression. Continue reading to learn how this is possible.
Strum Your Way to Better Health
At the starting line
The first thing you must do is find a teacher to help you begin the foundations of learning the guitar. You have undoubtedly seen private music lesson adverts up on coffee shop walls or on Craigslist. Many people assume these are good sources to turn to, as private instruction can be cheaper than going through a local music store. However, most of these teachers aren’t certified or trained to teach. Instead, turn to inexpensive private lessons offered by certified music teachers through national organizations. Such companies offer affordable rates and guitar lessons from some of the best teachers in the country.
Playing an instrument fights depression
There are many types of depression. As some forms are more serious than others, all sorts should be treated and never ignored. Commonly, a woman can feel depressed from work-related stress mingled with poor sleep quality or not enough hours of sleep. Before considering medication there are some things you can do to fight depression while getting creative and having fun. According to researchers, performing music has specific qualities that allow people to express themselves and interact in a non-verbal way. This even applies in situations where they cannot find the words to describe their inner experiences. By being able to tap into the deeper complexities of musical expression, people can harness that power to fight depression by letting off a little steam.
Let us look at this from a more general and basic level. When we begin to learn an instrument such as the guitar, the teacher will give us scale exercises that will build hand strength and promote fingering techniques. At the same time, we will be learning basic chords and notes. When we master these challenges we graduate on to the next set, and so forth. Every little advancement is a victory in the learning process. It feels good to achieve something. And as our brains pump out those happy endorphins that stimulate pleasure, we are learning an art form while expressing ourselves. The benefits flood in from every angle.
Goodbye stress
When we engage ourselves in activities that combat stress levels, we are improving multiple aspects of our overall health. By easing stress, we are reducing the physical symptoms that often come with it. These symptoms include headaches, chest pain, low sex drive, fatigue, upset stomach and many other ailments. By picking up a guitar not only will you be challenging yourself and having fun, you will be engaging in an activity that promotes meaning and pleasure. Who knows, in your first guitar lesson you may be strumming your way to better health.

Best Diet Boosters for Moms – Walking Clubs – Guest Post

“Moms walking clubs,” in which women who have recently given birth get together to take vigorous walks and engage in other forms of exercise, are springing up all over the nation. They are becoming very popular for after all, few things motivate people to get into shape more than doing so in groups. With newly-made mothers the incentive to join such a group is particularly strong because all of the members are going through the same routines and struggles.

Walking Club for Moms

The vigorous exercise that you can get would not be complete, however, without some sort of dietary supplement to maximize the benefit from it. Here, then, are some of the best diet boosters for new moms that are naturally perfect for walking clubs. Some of them are energy boosters, while others serve to enhance your mood.

Energy boosters

The amount of energy that you get from eating should be determined first of all by what you have for breakfast. A simple carbohydrate meal, such as one with white toast or sugary cereal, is not usually going to be enough as it will cause the blood sugar level to shoot way up and then just as quickly go back down again–instead you should have an assortment of nutrients that includes complex carbohydrates such as cereals and whole grain bread, and protein dishes like eggs and yoghurt.

During the course of the rest of the day, rather than having a big lunch and dinner, you should try eating a few small ones throughout. That way you will be able to keep your energy level on a fairly even keel. Eat snacks that are high in protein. Energy bars are okay provided they are not too high in sugar and fat.

Mood boosters

After giving birth to a new child women often feel down and depressed once the initial excitement has worn off. Besides they are adjusting to a new way of life that involves taking care of the infant. The food you eat can affect your mood, so you should choose those that will help you to feel on the “up and up.” Omega-3 oils in particular are good for this purpose. According to many experts you should have a single gram of such oil per day, which you can get from one to two teaspoons of canola, flax seed or walnut oils or from a serving of herring or salmon. Two omega-fortified eggs will also do the trick. If the foods that you eat are not giving you all the omega-3 oils that you need you can take them in the form of pills—but be sure to read the label to determine the amount they contain. Those that contain cod liver oil, however, are to be strictly avoided if you are breastfeeding, because they contain too much vitamins A and D. You should also distribute the pills over the day to reduce the chances of diarrhea and other symptoms.

Dealing with pregnancy-induced weight gain

Often, immediately after they have given birth, women fell eager to shed the weight they have gained. They thus feel that they need to go on a special diet and may even virtually starve themselves. This is not good. New mothers need extra special nutrition to supply milk to feed their babies—a requirement which involves eating 500 more calories than before pregnancy. They therefore should not even consider the problem of shedding weight until they have not only fully recovered from the effects of their pregnancy but also have a well-established milk supply. A mother’s healthcare provider will give her the go-ahead on that matter. Even then the temptation to go on a “crash diet” should be avoided. The toxins that are normally stored in body fat will be released, possibly into the milk, if weight is lost too rapidly.

Some miscellaneous information

Just before pregnancy, and during the first month thereof, folate leaves are a good thing to take as they reduce the chance of the baby having a neural tube defect.

As a member of a mom’s walking club you will want to have both the physical and the mental energy to participate.

Healing in the Hurting Places Book Review and Giveaway

Healing in the Hurting Places Book Tour

People deal with pain in different ways. For Karen F. Riley, coming to know God and increase her faith was her way. She wrote Healing in the Hurting Places to help others who were sexually abused come to terms and deal with their own pain. In Healing in the Hurting Places, Karen reveals her own addictions to food, her struggles with suicidal thoughts, and the guilt of unleashing her anger on the people she loved. With the help of God, she was able to move from victim to survivor. In the back of the book, Riley gives us some guidelines for dealing with someone who has been abused.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is to blame the victim. It seems as if people are under the impression that the victim did something to deserve what happened, which couldn’t be further from the truth. She also gives us some important things to think about and look for in the case we should even THINK someone is being or has been abused.

Though hard for me to get through at times, Healing in the Hurting Places was well written. I’m glad that Karen F. Riley found her reason for dealing and shared her story with others.

Healing in the Hurting Places Book Tour

Healing in the Hurting Places by Karen F. Riley

Healing in the Hurting Places Book Tour
Overview:

The depth of pain is overcome and replaced with the infusion of healing from God into every sliver of your mind, body, and spirit.

Healing in the Hurting Places is a personal experience story and outreach for victims of childhood sexual abuse, and those who want to help them. It sensitively focuses on the healing journey—how to recognize symptoms of abuse and offer help. Victims often feel alone, they don’t know where to turn or may believe no one will understand. Karen Riley speaks to that place of pain and takes you on the healing journey that transformed her life.

“This is not about the tragic event, but about where to go now. I want them to know that they are not alone, and there is One who can heal their broken hearts.” —Karen Riley

Others who will benefit from this story of hope and healing: those affected by alcoholism, drug abuse, domestic, and other physical or verbal abuse—and those who are involved with them.

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,

will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).

Many victims share similar characteristics and traits as a result of abuse, which often manifest in the same behavior patterns—Healing in the Hurting Places is a springboard to empowerment and better understanding.
