We treated the kids to a wrestling show put on by a local company Covey Pro in Berkeley Springs. Some of the wrestling is just pitiful. Others, it’s a great show. Depends on the wrestler.

We happen to be good friends with one of the wrestlers, Crazii Shea and his fiancee Krystal. He is one of the best! The kids adored him BEFORE I picked Krystal up when her car broke down. Now, they’re infatuated. So we catch him in action when we can.

So like I said, last night was one of those nights. We took them to wrestling, which is nearly an hour’s drive through twisty, turny mountainsides. Of course, there was a storm before we left. First of the year. And I was driving in it. Yay, me. The show started at 8 and it was doing nothing out. When the show was over, however, it was an entirely different ball game. The ground was covered. Easily an inch and a half of “Angel Puke” as I’ve heard it called.

Luckily, we have a Honda CR-V. That awesome car can handle just about anything you throw at it. (Except a Ford F-250, but that’s a story for another day) We came home and slid only once. Mommy was a nervous wreck, (So much more afraid of other people than I am of me), but the kids snored all the way home. Kudos to Honda!

And, Crazii Shea: Even though you got your ass kicked…by your boss nonetheless, who, in my EXTREMELY prejudiced opinion you should’ve thrashed royally–really; in real life–we luv you!

Oliver “Buster” Walters was his name. He lived 76 years, 6 months, and 25 days. And he was my pappy.

Pappy was an amazing person, and would do anything for anybody. Literally would give you the shirt off of his back, if it were the last one he owned. None of us are perfect, which is why I am choosing to talk about the good times. I normally write poems for situations like these, but right now, do not have a poetic fiber in my body.

Our family is big, and with that I think sometimes families are not as close. Our family is an exception. Pappy was such a loveable guy, which is why he had trouble saying no when someone asked him for something. Any time someone needed something, pappy was there. If he didn’t have it, he would get it.

He hated “rabbit food” aka lettuce. He loved all things sweet. Everyone came to learn the location of the tin cans he kept his candy in, and every kid that came to visit would ask pappy for a piece of candy. I remember his love for the little red and white peppermints. And banana popsicles. And fudge bars. And of course strawberry milkshakes. And Little Debbie snack cakes. He used to say Little Debbie was his girlfriend.

I was lucky to get to have him for 28 years. I was able to give him 2 of many great grandchildren, and my daughters just loved him. He was the apple of their eyes. One of my absolute favorite memories of pappy and my girls, is the love the 3 of them shared for strawberry milkshakes- a treat I would bring after about 90% of my shifts at the DQ. I always had to take him the big one, because the 3 of them could eat one faster than it would take me to make it.

Pappy would not want us to be sad, but to celebrate his life and remember all the good times we had with him. The last 3 1/2 months of his life were very tough, but pappy made his peace with God when he learned of that vile tumor. Knowing he made his peace has helped give me comfort, so pappy, I love you. Until we meet again…..
